Israel’s Brevel and Vgarden Team Up to Meet Global Demand for Premium Plant-Based Cheese

Kibbutz Gan Shmuel — Vgarden, a Gan Shmuel Health Industries company and leading developer and manufacturer of plant-based foods, together with Brevel, the Shekef-based microalgae-based alternative protein company, today announced they are collaborating to create premium, protein- packed vegan cheeses and additional foods to meet global market demand.

The first company to incorporate Brevel’s innovative microalgae protein into non-dairy cheeses, Vgarden will develop and manufacture the vegan foods in its factory in northern Israel. With major international eateries and food suppliers among its customers, Vgarden expects to introduce the novel products to its growing global markets in Australia, the United States, the UK and Western Europe next year.

The new collaboration seeks to overcome the key obstacle limiting growth of the plant-based cheese market, satisfying growing international consumer demand for nutritious, protein-rich plant-based cheese which does not compromise on taste.

Brevel’s cutting-edge technology preserves the nutritional values of the protein, enabling Vgarden to potentially develop new products containing high levels of protein without affecting the cheese’s color, texture, and flavor.

Brevel’s game-changing methodology is the first globally to combine sugar-based fermentation of microalgae with a high concentration of light at industrial scales, offering plant-based products a nutritious, color and flavor neutral protein on price parity with pea and soy.

Vgarden sells its successful range of plant-based cheeses, meat and fish alternatives in the Israeli market under the label Mashu Mashu (referring to “something special” in Hebrew) and worldwide under several leading brands.

Israel is a global powerhouse in the alternative protein and plant-based sector. A recent Good Food Institute Israel report found that by the end of June, Israeli alternative protein startups and companies this year raised $320 million, placing the small Middle Eastern state second only to the United States ($857 million) terms of alternative protein investments.

According to a report published recently by Fortune Business Insights, the global vegan food market is projected to grow from $26.16 billion in 2021 to $61.35 billion in 2028 at a CAGR of 12.95% between 2021-2028.

“Together with Brevel, we are mapping uncharted territories, navigating towards a more sustainable and nutritious food industry,” said Ilan Adut, CEO of Vgarden. “Israel is a leader in plant-based innovation, and it’s truly gratifying to pool Vgarden’s creativity and experience with another leading Israeli company to bring the world’s best plant-based cheeses to a rapidly growing global market.”

“Brevel is actively working to solve the biggest nutrition challenges that exist today. We are achieving this by providing truly sustainable microalgae protein which is both color and flavor neutral, and available for the first time at an affordable cost for partners like Vgarden,” said Yonatan Golan, CEO and Co-Founder of Brevel. “We are excited that Vgarden will be the first to incorporate Brevel’s protein in their cheese products and we are confident that this will be a true revolution for the vegan and flexitarian cheese eaters worldwide.”

Vgarden will enjoy an exclusivity limited period for the use of Brevel’s protein in Australia.
